What is spam?
|

A spam message is an unsolicited, usually commercial e-mail message. It is also referred to as UCE, or unsolicited commercial e-mail.

What is Mail Protection Service (MPS)?

The Mail Protection Service (MPS) is an e-mail security solution, fully hosted by AnubisNetworks.

What are the main advantages of a managed e-mail security service?

- Better resource management within your organization, with the outsourcing of all e-mail filtering services;
- Minimal deployment costs in terms of hardware and sofware;
- Reduced bandwidth and e-mail storage costs, with virus and spam being filtered outside your network;

What requirements do I need to meet in order to use MPS?
|
All you need is a domain name, such as mydomain.com, and an e-mail server that receives e-mail for this domain.

Why do I need to own a domain?
|
|
You need to have your own domain name because your e-mail flow must be redirected to the AnubisNetworks servers. You need full control of a domain to do this.
|
Can I have multiple domains or sub-domains?
|
|
Yes, you can manage multiple domains or sub-domains from a single administrative account.
|
|
What e-mail servers does MPS work with?
|
|
MPS works with any e-mail server, since messages are delivered to your organization using SMTP.
|
|
Will our e-mail addresses need to change?
|
|
No. There will be absolutely no changes at that level within your organization.
|
|
What is involved in setting up MPS?
|
|
All that is necessary is to redirect your domain's MX records to the AnubisNetworks servers. You can do this yourself if you have access to your domain's DNS servers. If not, this can be done by whoever hosts your domain - usually your ISP or an Internet hosting company. It is also advisable to configure your e-mail server to only accept e-mail from AnubisNetworks, after the new MX records fully propagate.

Will our e-mail delivery be interrupted during our mail exchange redirection?
|
|
No. When you redirect your domain's MX records to our servers, it will take a few days for the change to take full effect and propagate throughout the Internet.
During this period, e-mail for your domain will be delivered both at AnubisNetworks and your e-mail servers, so no e-mails will be lost.

Will I have to install new software?
|
|
No. MPS does not require you to install any new software. You can administer your account using a web browser, read your e-mail exactly the same way you did before and, since the service is hosted by AnubisNetworks, not worry about virus signatures updates or anti-spam rules anymore.

How does MPS impact e-mail performance?
|
|
MPS may introduce a slight delay (seconds) in your current e-mail flow. This happens because redirecting your MX records to us introduces an additional hop in the e-mail flow for your domain. This delay is negligible, specially considering the gain in performance in you local e-mail server due to the amount of spam and virus messages blocked outside your network.

Message Quarantine

For how long will messages be quarantined?
|
|
Messages will be quarantined for seven days. After that period, they are deleted.
|
|
What is the message digest?
|
|
It's a periodic e-mail report containing a list of messages that were quarantined for your domain or domains. Optionally, this report can also contain the messages that were discarded by MPS.
|
|
When will I receive the message digest?
|
|
If you choose to receive the message digest, it will be sent to you either daily or weekly, depending on your settings.
|
|
Why am I not receiving my message digest?
|
|
The message digest will not be sent if no messages were quarantined during the selected period. It is also possible that your e-mail client's spam filter classifies the message digest as spam, so you should check your junk folder and whitelist the message sender, if possible. This can happen because the digest contains the subjects of messages held in your quarantine, hence classified as spam.

Greylisting

What is Greylisting?
|
|
Greylisting is a technique in which some or all SMTP connections are temporarily refused, using a failure error that requires delivery to be retried at a later time.
|
|
How does Greylisting reduce spam?
|
|
Most spam is not sent out using RFC compliant e-mail servers, so there will be no retry at a later time. Those messages will never reach the filtering engine or your mailbox.

Won't spammers adapt?
|
|
Yes, but the delay imposed will both improve the chances of identifying the spammer, using conventional anti-spam filtering, and raise the costs of sending spam, because of the large number of messages that will be stored at the spammer's servers awaiting redelivery.

What happens to legitimate messages?
|
|
Properly configured e-mail servers are required to retry message delivery after a period of time. When that happens, the message will be accepted into the filtering engine.
|
|
Will legitimate messages be delayed?
|
|
Legitimate messages will be delayed for at least a few minutes, to prevent immediate redelivery within the same SMTP session. Internet specifications suggest that messages temporarily refused be redelivered within four hours, but most servers are configured to retry in far less time, often in the order of five minutes. Ultimately, the delay will depend on the configuration of the sender's e-mail server.
